PLEIN AIR ARTISTS CAPTURE THE BEAUTY OF ST. AUGUSTINE

St. Augustine, FL (Apr 28) – This weekend marks the home stretch of the citywide ST. AUGUSTINE PLEIN AIR PAINT OUT, hosted by the St. Augustine Art Association. For almost two weeks, more than 50 artists from the Southeast have been creating paintings that reflect the architectural beauty of St. Augustine.

From dawn to midnight, passersby have found artists on location in and around the downtown area, off the beaten path in Lincolnville, in the Flagler Model Land Co. Neighborhood, at the Castillo de San Marcos, along the bay front and in far-flung parts of the city.

Selected works produced during the Paint Out will be featured in a juried exhibition entitled, “Gilded: Impressions of the Flagler Era,” May 5 thru 28, at the St. Augustine Art Association, 22 Marine Street.  Awards amounting to $2,500, including a $1,000 Best in Show prize will be announced May 7, at a  closing concert reception “Arias & Accolades,” featuring the First Coast Opera.

“This has been an incredible experience for the artists and our city,” said Elyse Brady, STAAA Executive Director.  “These talented and tenacious artists are continuing a legacy of working on location here that dates back centuries and their beautiful paintings reflect a genuine sense of joy and pride.”

In addition to their field work, artists attended numerous activities, including a painting demonstration by PBS Painting and Travel host, Roger Bansemer,a framing talk by Dan Hubley of St. Augustine Framing, an Art & Architecture Walking Tour led by Melissa Stuart and other presentations.  The event was made possible through a JoAnn Crisp-Ellert grant from the Community Foundation of Northeast Florida.

To view photos of the St. Augustine Plein Air Paint Out, log on to the staaa.org Facebook page.  Or better yet, take a walk around town and see the artists in action at their easels.

Rapture in Blue | 48×60 | Claire J Kendrick available through Plum Gallery, St Augustine

“It is my practice to always work with reference. I like to buy fresh flowers and set up the arrangement and start with a strong composition. This is always my foundation. As I begin painting, each brush stroke has to say something. Putting down a mark and deciding to keep or remove, I try to ask myself if this mark adds something to the painting. The results are dynamic, energetic forms–they show the energy you put into the painting. The still life floral paintings have a life and vitality.”

Pushing boundaries, Claire takes the paintings outdoors and uses a blow torch to melt wax mixed with oil paint, giving a free-flow effect which she then decides to manipulate or leave. This is a process of constant editing, painting, taking away then reapplying paint or wax, building the image slowly in layers.

“You should paint as you live life; expression should be in your work. See the things of beauty you enjoy and fill your life with that energy.”

Pathway to Calm

Pathway to Calm | 36×60 | Oil  | Available through CJK- Studio

Living on the east coast of the United States I look out on the Atlantic Ocean and I’m challenged as an artist to capture its vastness. The high seas and big storm fronts remind me of my native home, Ireland, the North West Outpost of Europe. Those memories combined with the ferociousness of the weather fronts brings a depth and passion to my work, yet the stillness and peace of the southern shores is a soothing calm and is both a joy and quest to capture as a plein air and studio painter.

Symbolically the ocean is a sign of power and strength, due to its immensity. Observing and painting the great power of the ocean and its weather fronts is much like having a front row seat at the theater. As a plein air painter there is an urgency and need to capture the essence of your vista – it’s sparked by emotion and energy. Then the atmosphere and weather of the outdoors adds to the paintings aliveness. All this –- the vigor of life is to be conveyed onto a canvas. It is a love, and a challenge.
