Puzzle Pond

Puzzle Pond | 9” x 12” | In studio Plein Air Study in a dark shady side part of the lake at the Jacksonville Arboretum. These dark dense areas are a maze of shapes and color shifts and loads of stuff that just boggles the mind. Seeing shapes and simplifying the mass was the challenge here. So these paintings become like songs notes, staccatos’ and pause steps to make it read as one place, feeling or moment. “The song and

A day to play

A day to Play | 8” X 8” | In studio This was a plein air study at Jacksonville Arboretum. I will be painting there in six weeks’ time for A Brush with Nature – A plein air painting event. It’s amazing in that short time, how everything in the forest changes it becomes a sea of green everything is quickly coming into bloom and it can be quite a challenge to paint. As usual I have fun pushing

Dutton Bright

Dutton Bright | 12” x 12” | In Studio So last week I posted some plein air sketches painted on location at Dutton Island. It was a stunning spot and this time of year it’s a dark autumnal palette. I thought the paintings were maybe a little dark when I got them into the studio but they had something I liked, a moody feeling about them. Florida can be so over saturated with light sometimes that this time of year

Dutton Island

16″x20″ | Oil on canvas | In studio This week I have been painting en plein air at Dutton Island, Florida. It was a great spot for big open marsh scenes it’s a quiet dirt road leading to a boat ramp not busy this time of year. I started on a 16×20 canvas and had to work quick as the nats on steroids (gnats) were killer, I would have liked to spray ’em good but we plein air artists try

Shadow Box CJK-Studio

With the beginning of 2012 its been an opportunity for a major tidy up – one car load of excess has been delivered to charity. If you haven’t used or worn something in a year give it to someone who needs it more than you! Ahh it feels great to be lighter and brighter in the New Year. Rid of clutter I set about organizing the studio and building a new shadow box, something I’ve be procrastinating about for a

All wrapped up …!

Well it seems even the boats are wrapped up for the holidays! I visited Green Cove Springs Marina and painted en plein air with a good friend who used to store her boat there. It’s a great place as boat owners are able to work on their own boats in the yard so there is always a lot happening. Especially since most of these folks are getting ready to sail to the Bahamas for the winter season….. ahh it’s a

St Augustine Sunset Series

The Sunset St Augustine series – these were fun to paint en plein air and studio, they are painted in a warm palette and reflect the heat of our little old St Augustine, these views are from Vilano driving into the city looking across the marsh and bay! In one the St Augustine lighthouse is visible and in the second The Bridge of Lions was open and so from a distance this was just visible on the horizon. Enjoy
