Celebrating 100 Years of Sister Cities: St. Augustine & Avilés, Spain
In 1924, St. Augustine renewed its ties with Avilés, Spain, becoming sister cities. This year marks the 100th anniversary of this beautiful relationship, and celebrations will take place throughout St. Augustine. On September 5, officials from both cities will visit, and from the 7th to the 8th, the city will come alive with music, cultural events, and artistic showcases.
The 458th Anniversary of St. Augustine will be celebrated on September 7 at 10 AM at Mission Nombre de Dios. On September 8, the festivities continue with a day-long festival, including the unveiling of a new marker commemorating the centennial of the sister city relationship.
Art & Culture Highlights:
During the Avilés Street celebrations, don’t miss the work of local and international artists. My good friend and talented artist, Martha Ferguson, returns home after painting in Spain, bringing her experiences and insights back to St. Augustine.
Claire J Kendrick at Plum Gallery:
I’m excited to share that my work will be featured in the window at Plum Gallery on Aviles Street. As part of a group show, you’ll find a stunning collection of works including watercolors, glass, and sculpture. My studio on Charlotte Street will also be buzzing with energy during the festivities, so feel free to stop by!
This celebration of heritage and art is not to be missed, with live music, reenactors, flamenco, and a day full of friendship and festivities. Join us in St. Augustine for a memorable weekend!
