PLEIN AIR ARTISTS CAPTURE THE BEAUTY OF ST. AUGUSTINE

St. Augustine, FL (Apr 28) – This weekend marks the home stretch of the citywide ST. AUGUSTINE PLEIN AIR PAINT OUT, hosted by the St. Augustine Art Association. For almost two weeks, more than 50 artists from the Southeast have been creating paintings that reflect the architectural beauty of St. Augustine.

From dawn to midnight, passersby have found artists on location in and around the downtown area, off the beaten path in Lincolnville, in the Flagler Model Land Co. Neighborhood, at the Castillo de San Marcos, along the bay front and in far-flung parts of the city.

Selected works produced during the Paint Out will be featured in a juried exhibition entitled, “Gilded: Impressions of the Flagler Era,” May 5 thru 28, at the St. Augustine Art Association, 22 Marine Street.  Awards amounting to $2,500, including a $1,000 Best in Show prize will be announced May 7, at a  closing concert reception “Arias & Accolades,” featuring the First Coast Opera.

“This has been an incredible experience for the artists and our city,” said Elyse Brady, STAAA Executive Director.  “These talented and tenacious artists are continuing a legacy of working on location here that dates back centuries and their beautiful paintings reflect a genuine sense of joy and pride.”

In addition to their field work, artists attended numerous activities, including a painting demonstration by PBS Painting and Travel host, Roger Bansemer,a framing talk by Dan Hubley of St. Augustine Framing, an Art & Architecture Walking Tour led by Melissa Stuart and other presentations.  The event was made possible through a JoAnn Crisp-Ellert grant from the Community Foundation of Northeast Florida.
