“Morning Wake Up” | 48×48 | CJK

Living on the east coast of the United States I look out on the Atlantic Ocean and I’m challenged as an artist to capture its vastness. The storms and high seas remind me of my native home, Ireland, the North West Outpost of Europe. Those memories combined with the ferociousness of the weather fronts brings a depth and passion to my work, yet the stillness and peace of the southern shores as depicted in “Morning Wake Up” is a soothing calm and is both a joy and quest to capture as a plein air and studio painter.

Symbolically the ocean is a sign of power and strength, due to its immensity. Observing and painting the great power of the ocean and its weather fronts is much like having a front row seat at the theater. As a plein air painter there is an urgency and need to capture the essence of your vista – it’s sparked by emotion and energy. Then the atmosphere and weather of the outdoors adds to the paintings aliveness. All this –- the vigor of life is to be conveyed onto a canvas. It is a love, and a challenge.

“The vistas of possibility are only limited by the shortness of life.”
(Winston Churchill)

Path Leading to the Sea

30×30 | Oil on Board | CJK

Seascape Painting done from the Dunes on the National Seashore Cape Cod, MA. Staying in one of the famous Dune Shack I would go out each day and paint sometimes large canvases like this one using a Beauport Easel. It was a great investment easel for the trip, light weight and sturdy – it’s been perfect for working on large plein air paintings.

The seas are the heart’s blood of the earth. Plucked up and kneaded by the sun and the moon, the tides are systole and diastole of earth’s veins.

– Henry Beston, The Outermost House.

Commissioned Dune & Seascape Oil Painting – “Belonging”

36 x 84 | Oil Encaustic

Artist Notes

This very large scale seascape painting was commissioned by the client, it is to be a statement piece above a long sectional sofa in their great room. A stunning selection of fabrics was sent to me to give a feel for the furnishings in the room a soft palette of sand green, and blue hues. Working with interior designers and architects is second nature to me and I love having a feel for the space when painting a large piece as it helps create the “wow” factor, a painting is often the final touch in a room — sometimes pulling a scheme together but I am always striving for the work of art, to be be timeless with a sense of place beyond the here and now. I sense of drama is so important even in a calm painting. This magnificent large scale dune painting is going to a home in South Florida.

Artist Video Profile | Filmed in Ireland Jan 2015

Claire Jane Kendrick | Video Profile
Filmed in Ireland Jan 2015

I am so inspired when returning to my homeland, this short video was filmed in January 2015 when I was visiting friends and family in Co. Donegal, Ireland. It is a stunning area with a rugged coast lots of sandy coves and a maritime climate. This video gives you an insight!

As an artist it’s a joy to watch the weather fronts roll in and the light break through the clouds. It’s so dramatic!! The open vistas remind me of looking out over the expansive marsh lands in my new home north Florida – however the temperatures are very different!

Ireland has a rich heritage of poets, painters, musicians and the land and stunning scenery make you stop in your tracks and admire “God’s country”! Of course the locals use that expression because it’s an area supposed to be favored, especially an isolated beautiful rural land like my native region. Maybe it’s the isolation, that lets the creativity happen. That’s true for me. I have to allow myself time in the studio without interruption.
