Sketches taken at the beach sometimes inspire these larger paintings. A love of the coast and walks on the beach remind us to escape the humdrum of life and just breath.

Staring at the Sea | 24×24 | Oil Encaustic Painting | CJK
May this be a healthy and happy new year for you all. I started by clearing the decks of my studio and organizing…..the frenzy was followed by moments of contemplation – – Staring at the sea! Never underestimate the necessary time to unplug and go off grid and just be. Creativity needs time alone.
In this seascape painting I wanted to show color in every aspect of the spectrum, even those seemingly dull clouds have a subtle light shifts. A new product for me is the blue fluorescent pure pigment just seen in a small area of this painting. Raw pigment can be mixed with wax and here is is applied thick and heavy onto the panel board.Claire J KendrickOil PaintingJanuary 19, 20160 comments

This very large scale seascape painting was commissioned by the client, it is to be a statement piece above a long sectional sofa in their great room. A stunning selection of fabrics was sent to me to give a feel for the furnishings in the room a soft palette of sand green, and blue hues. Working with interior designers and architects is second nature to me and I love having a feel for the space when painting a large piece as it helps create the “wow” factor, a painting is often the final touch in a room — sometimes pulling a scheme together but I am always striving for the work of art, to be be timeless with a sense of place beyond the here and now. I sense of drama is so important even in a calm painting. This magnificent large scale dune painting is going to a home in South Florida.Claire J KendrickOil Painting, SeascapeNovember 30, 20150 comments
From the Left
Living on the east coast of the United States I look out on the Atlantic Ocean and I’m challenged as an artist to capture its vastness. The stillness and peace of the southern shores is a soothing calm and is both a joy and quest to capture as a plein air and studio painter.
Symbolically the ocean is a sign of power and strength, due to its immensity. Observing and painting the great power of the ocean and its weather fronts is much like having a front row seat at the theater. As a plein air painter there is an urgency and need to capture the essence of your vista – it’s sparked by emotion and energy. Then the atmosphere and weather of the outdoors adds to the paintings aliveness. It is a love, and a challenge.Claire J KendrickUncategorizedOctober 17, 20150 comments
This beautiful commission was delivered to collector’s – they had worked with their architect remodeling their large open plan family room. I’m honored to have been a part of the project helping them with the finishing touch a textured oil painting inspired by the views from their doorstep! Wishing this family years of enjoyment, in their gorgeous home.

Small Plein Air Paintings are often inspiration for larger works of art. They capture a liveliness and spontaneity and act as color notes and reference when working back in the studio.
Often these paintings are emotional notes — and tapping into that energy shows up in the brushwork. When feeling is conveyed via mark making I think its the visual artists closest link to performance art. We get to perform in the privacy of our own studio’s and hope the viewer sees and shares the passion in the finished painting. The collector gets to keep that energy and be inspired by it.

This studio painting was inspired by small plein oil painting. The spontaneity and aliveness is hard to sometimes recreate in the studio and in a large scale — but this one has lots of energy.
Here is the painting again – this time outside – just to give a sense of the proportions!

“Changing Tide” finds a new home, thank you to new collectors for allowing me to share a photograph of this 5ft x 6ft, oil encaustic seascape painting installed in their beautiful home!
– When the tide changes, there is a short period in a body of tidal water when all is calm, when the water is completely unstressed, and there is no movement either way in the tidal stream, the ocean seemingly stands still before the movement and momentum of tidal stream reverses. Everyone needs an excuse stop, and just let the world go by! Enjoy your changing tide time!!

Water is a universal symbol of change and as we mark the end of one year and the beginning of another it seems fitting to share new works from my Seascape series with you. Symbolically the ocean is a sign of power and strength, due to its immensity. A New Year marks change and optimism and watching the great power of the ocean and its weather fronts is much like having a front row seat at the theater. Capturing these special moments are my joy and challenge as an artist.
Wishing everyone a very special 2014!
