Miles of Beach

30″ x 48″ | Oil Encaustic on canvas | In studio

Painting inspired by small beach studies done on location in Cape Cod, MA.

Oil paint mixed with wax and brought outside, with a blow torch melt heavy layers of paint being careful not to burn areas. Try to control the flame while the melting paint is out of control just keep moving the canvas. The effects can be wonderfully free. I recommend ampersand encaustic board it is a more solid substrate if you’re working with very heavy layers. Wax can catch fire easily so always have wet rags and fire extinguisher at hand. Always do this outside!
