Large Scale Art Work Progression Video 1

Artist Claire Jane Kendrick shares her process when approaching large scale fine art painting.

www.cjk-studio.com

So it’s time to unveil a massive commission painting I have been working on, usually paintings go straight into the home or office of the collector. This time the collectors and gallery have very kindly agreed to exhibit the painting so that it can be showcased and seen by friends and collectors of Art on Centre Gallery.

This is really a unique opportunity and so there will be no preview of the artwork – until the collector and friends have had a chance to see it first.  – You simply must visit the gallery to see it in person!

The magnificent 12ft x 6.5ft Marsh Painting “Joyful Heart” is one of the largest private home installations we are delighted to have the opportunity to share with you before it leaves the gallery for  its new home.

Opening Night – Saturday, 14th September, 2019 – exhibiting for 4 weeks!
Location – Art on Centre, Centre Street Fernandina, Florida Keep in touch following the exhibition, if you are interested in seeing the process of this commission, sketches and time delay video will show how I approach this type of large scale work – privacy of collectors and painting location are always respected.

Large Scale Dynamic Landscapes in Oil Paint

Expressive Contemporary Landscapes by Claire J Kendrick showing at Plum Gallery.
Art Walk (St. Augustine) – Late Night Opening 1st Friday of Every Month.

Working in Oil and Wax the matte texture of Kendricks landscape paintings show the energy and brushwork of the artist. Modern interpretations of the Marshlands north of St. Augustine, are inspiration for Kendrick who lives and works on Vilano  Beach. Pushing the boundary of what is traditionally expected in Landscape painting Kendricks paintings are recognizable but she takes artistic license with color, building layers of paint, overlapping tones and textures in oil paint mixed with a wax medium giving her work a signature style.

See this body of work exhibiting at Plum Gallery until January 22nd, 2018.

PLEIN AIR ARTISTS CAPTURE THE BEAUTY OF ST. AUGUSTINE

St. Augustine, FL (Apr 28) – This weekend marks the home stretch of the citywide ST. AUGUSTINE PLEIN AIR PAINT OUT, hosted by the St. Augustine Art Association. For almost two weeks, more than 50 artists from the Southeast have been creating paintings that reflect the architectural beauty of St. Augustine.

From dawn to midnight, passersby have found artists on location in and around the downtown area, off the beaten path in Lincolnville, in the Flagler Model Land Co. Neighborhood, at the Castillo de San Marcos, along the bay front and in far-flung parts of the city.

Selected works produced during the Paint Out will be featured in a juried exhibition entitled, “Gilded: Impressions of the Flagler Era,” May 5 thru 28, at the St. Augustine Art Association, 22 Marine Street.  Awards amounting to $2,500, including a $1,000 Best in Show prize will be announced May 7, at a  closing concert reception “Arias & Accolades,” featuring the First Coast Opera.

“This has been an incredible experience for the artists and our city,” said Elyse Brady, STAAA Executive Director.  “These talented and tenacious artists are continuing a legacy of working on location here that dates back centuries and their beautiful paintings reflect a genuine sense of joy and pride.”

In addition to their field work, artists attended numerous activities, including a painting demonstration by PBS Painting and Travel host, Roger Bansemer,a framing talk by Dan Hubley of St. Augustine Framing, an Art & Architecture Walking Tour led by Melissa Stuart and other presentations.  The event was made possible through a JoAnn Crisp-Ellert grant from the Community Foundation of Northeast Florida.

To view photos of the St. Augustine Plein Air Paint Out, log on to the staaa.org Facebook page.  Or better yet, take a walk around town and see the artists in action at their easels.

Here is a chance to see inside the studio of CJK – this short video shows her artistic process. From chaos to clarity it is sometimes hard to see where she may be going with a work of art but the results are stunning. Her technique is shown from working sketch to application of light washes in oil paint to heavy layers of oil and wax melted outside using a blow torch.

Artist Video Profile | Filmed in Ireland Jan 2015

Claire Jane Kendrick | Video Profile
Filmed in Ireland Jan 2015

I am so inspired when returning to my homeland, this short video was filmed in January 2015 when I was visiting friends and family in Co. Donegal, Ireland. It is a stunning area with a rugged coast lots of sandy coves and a maritime climate. This video gives you an insight!

As an artist it’s a joy to watch the weather fronts roll in and the light break through the clouds. It’s so dramatic!! The open vistas remind me of looking out over the expansive marsh lands in my new home north Florida – however the temperatures are very different!

Ireland has a rich heritage of poets, painters, musicians and the land and stunning scenery make you stop in your tracks and admire “God’s country”! Of course the locals use that expression because it’s an area supposed to be favored, especially an isolated beautiful rural land like my native region. Maybe it’s the isolation, that lets the creativity happen. That’s true for me. I have to allow myself time in the studio without interruption.

Living across the pond on the east coast of the United States I look out on the Atlantic Ocean and I’m challenged as an artist to capture its vastness. The high seas and big storm fronts remind me of my native home, Ireland, the North West Outpost of Europe. Those memories combined with the ferociousness of the weather fronts brings a depth and passion to my work, yet the stillness and peace of the southern shores is a soothing calm and is both a joy and quest to capture as a plein air and studio painter.

As a plein air painter there is an urgency and need to capture the essence of your vista – it’s sparked by emotion and energy. Then the atmosphere and weather of the outdoors adds to the paintings aliveness. All this –- the vigor of life is to be conveyed onto a canvas. It is a love, and a challenge.

“The vistas of possibility are only limited by the shortness of life.” -Winston Churchill
