Tools of the Trade

One of the neat things about ArtWalk is that people visiting the gallery get to meet the artists. For the artists we get to meet collectors, other artists and some people who may never have set foot in a gallery. Its fun to talk about art, painting, technique, inspiration and at the latest ArtWalk, tools of the trade came up!!

So this is some information for artists who want to work on large canvases. For a big canvas you need a big brush, big palette and big palette knife for mixing and plenty of paint. Don’t skimp on paint! I once watched a great artist use about $60 of paint on one honest brush stroke. Don’t skimp on paint!! Did I say that already, I mean it ….. don’t skimp on paint.

The Scottish in all of us wants to make that paint go a little further than it should and if you admit to that, well you’re going to like this brush. The Liquitex free style brushes and palette knives, (no I’m not sponsored by them and get no perks for recommending the product) try them I think you’re going to like em! I like the broad flat long handle size 4” good for gestural strokes on large scale work or reaching high places!! There’s a tool called a Splatter its great for splatter effects funnily enough! I have a few large palette knives but you know I prefer smaller knives and it’s all personal preference. The old cheap brushes from Home Depot do the trick too but they use a tone of paint and are a big hassle to clean.

So next ArtWalk if you like someone’s work, ask them about it. Artists I know are happy to share information talk about their approach to painting.
